WALKING THE OLD BOONTON LINE
A Photographic Journey on the Abandoned Rails of New Jersey
The Old Boonton Line of the Erie Railroad is the proposed route of a paved bike path that will stretch from Montclair to Jersey City. Wheeler Antabanez (Writer, Photographer, Weird NJ Correspondent) walked the rails one last time before the tracks disappeared. After reaching the Hudson River Waterfront, Wheeler took to the sky in a helicopter to capture aerial photos of the New Jersey landscape he had just traversed.
Formerly part of the New York and Greenwood Lake Railroad, the abandoned Old Boonton Line of the Erie Railroad runs through Montclair, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, Belleville, Newark, Kearny, Secaucus, and Jersey City. This book is a marker for the winter of 2021/2022, the last moments when the Old Boonton Line was still perfectly abandoned, wild, and free. View the WTOBL web page
WALKING THE NEWARK BRANCH
A Photographic Journey on the Abandoned Rails of New Jersey
One hundred fifty years of railroad history abandoned and left to rot in place provides the backdrop for Wheeler Antabanez as he walks the Newark Branch of the Erie Railroad. This 200-page photo essay reads like an epic travelogue but is actually a hyperlocal adventure that unfolds in the backwaters, and sometimes backyards, of North Jersey.
The adventure begins deep into the Meadowlands to find the exact spot where the Erie Newark Branch peels off from the Old Boonton Line. As the expedition unfolds, Wheeler investigates such forsaken landmarks as the abandoned WNEW radio transmitter, Clark Thread Mill, NX Bridge, Riverside Industrial Superfund Site, Walter Kidde Brownfield Site, the Nutley Train Trestle, and many more. Walking the Old Boonton Line - The Movie
